Why did they die so young?

A message from Bishop Dr Robert Solomon
HE WAS barely 20 when he started keeping a spiritual journal. He wrote down his thoughts and prayers regularly for the rest of his life – which was to end eight years later, when he was tragically killed. His journal entries reflect a maturity way beyond his age, and a deep commitment and devotion to God. His journal entry on Oct 28, 1949, after turning 22, has become a classic quotation: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose...

What did Jesus mean that those who do not hate their parents, etc., cannot be his disciples? (Luke 14:26)

THERE are at least two reasons why many Christians would find the statement of Jesus recorded in Luke 14:26 difficult, even off-putting. The first is that this saying is simply difficult to accept. The second is that it appears to contradict the teachings of Jesus recorded elsewhere in the Gospels. For example, in Mark 7:9-13, Jesus censured the Pharisees for introducing a law which prohibits people from using the money they have vowed to give to God to meet a need of their parents...

WORSHIP is a matter of giving to God what He desires and requires of us. It is not, and never was, intended to be a spectator sport or the performance of the few for the benefit of the many couch potatoes in the pew. Stating this in his no-punches-pulled style, the Rev Dr Ben Witherington, III added: “The consumer approach to worship puts the emphasis almost entirely on the wrong syllable. It leads to pastors desperately seeking to change worship patterns and acts so it will attract a bigger crowd on the theory that worship should be a matter of giving the people what they want and crave.”...

Sports and games foster religious harmony
Sample Image

SPORTS and games have always enjoyed a universal following. People engage in them and other physical activities for fun, recreation and even for health reasons. Recently, a Christian body appropriated such activities to serve another purpose – to foster inter-racial and inter-religious harmony. The Christian body in question is the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS). On April 19, 2008, the NCCS hosted an inter-faith event that was unlike any it had ever held...
