CDCM @ TTC Evening Courses (Jul - Aug 2018)

on .

The Centre for the Development of Christian Ministry @ Trinity Theological College (TTC) which organises courses to equip Christians for lifelong learning, personal growth and ministry will be offering two evening courses from July to August 2018.

cdcm jul aug 2018 medium Christian Doctrine
Christian doctrine is an articulation of our beliefs that shape and characterise us as the people of God. It is our collection of shared beliefs that enable us to say “This is us!” The coverage of each of the areas of doctrine will be grounded in Holy Scripture, guided by the Church tradition(s), and geared towards engaging contemporary issues and challenges. The aim of the course is to give students a broad overview of the Christian faith and to appreciate the importance of Christian doctrines for understanding our identity, in turn spurring our practical living.

Dates: 9 Jul – 27 Aug (8 Monday evenings)

Time and Place: 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Wesley Methodist Church, Level 1, Plaza Hall (take lift beside info counter), 5 Fort Canning Road, Singapore 179493

Instructor: Rev Dr Edmund Fong, PhD (University of Otago) lectures in the areas of Theology and Hermeneutics at TTC. He is an ordained minister with the Presbyterian Church in Singapore, and is an associate minister of Adam Road Presbyterian Church. His PhD was in the theology of the Swiss theologian Karl Barth, but he finds himself broadening his scope to cover theology in general and Reformation Theology.

The Book of Revelation
The book of Revelation is a book of mystery, contention and controversy. It contains many puzzling symbols and imagery. What are we to make of its visions of apocalyptic horsemen, seals and censers, the millennium, flying angels, and mutant beasts? The reader is often caught between the literal and the symbolic – not knowing how to interpret them. This evokes two kinds of responses: an unhealthy obsession with the book or total avoidance. This course will seek to unlock the meaning of Revelation. It also answers perennial questions such as “Is God in control of world affairs?” “If God is good, why is there evil and suffering?” “Can I know the future of our world – and my part in it?” More important, Revelation warns us of compromise and strengthens our hope in the future, so that we can live out our Christian faith and witness in this world gone wrong.

Dates: 3 July – 21 Aug (8 Tuesday evenings)

Time and Place: 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Trinity Theological College, Lecture Room 2 (Level 3), 490 Upper Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 678093

Instructor: Rev Dr Oh Boon Leong, completed his PhD in New Testament at King’s College, London. His special area of studies is the writing and theology of the Apostle Paul. He received an MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and the ThM from the University of Aberdeen. He is married and serves as the Senior Pastor of Mount Carmel Bible-Presbyterian Church. He has previously taught CDCM courses on 1 Corinthians, Galatians and the Life of Jesus.

Issues in Christian Mission
This course surveys the expansion and development of Christianity as Missio Dei (mission of God), from both historical and holistic perspectives. The salvation and renewal of all creation, the proclamation and practice of His word, and the growth and witness of the church are essentially understood as God’s mission. The first part of the course outlines the significant events/movements in transmission of the Christian faith. The latter half of the course sketches the significant themes of holistic mission, all of which are understood as God’s mission in bringing the whole Gospel to the whole world.
