Rev Dr Chong Chin Chung

SingaporeThe Rev Dr Chong Chin Chung, 61, will take office as the new Bishop of The Methodist Church in Singapore (MCS) after his Episcopal Consecration Service, to be held Friday, 2 December 2016, 8 p.m. at Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church and Faith Methodist Church (400 Commonwealth Drive).

In so doing, he will step into the role of spiritual leader for more than 42,000 Methodists – the largest Protestant mainline denomination in Singapore. It has 46 churches, 15 Methodist schools, 16 Methodist pre-schools, and serves the community through its welfare arm, the Methodist Welfare Services.

Asked about his vision for the MCS in his upcoming four-year term (known as a quadrennium), the Rev Dr Chong said: “Our goal ahead is unity – that Methodists would be united as one to serve the community with the love of God.”

More than 1,000 attendees are expected at the Consecration Service to witness the dedication of their new Bishop by several Methodist guest Bishops from Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Taiwan. The consecration will also be witnessed by 120 Methodist pastors, and accompanied by a 70-strong combined orchestra and two choirs comprising 170 singers.

The Rev Dr Chong’s immediate predecessor, Bishop Dr Wee Boon Hup, will lead the Service and the consecration. He will retire at the completion of his four-year term from 2012-2016, and has been accorded the title of Bishop Emeritus.

The election of the Rev Dr Chong had been from a list of 43 eligible ministers at the Church’s 11th Session of General Conference at Ang Mo Kio Methodist Church on 13 September 2016. It was conducted by secret ballot, and 42 votes were cast, with the Rev Dr Chong receiving the required two-thirds majority on the 8th ballot.
