NCCS Note on Inviting Foreign Preachers

The Straits Times recently reported that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has denied short-term work passes to two foreign Christian preachers.

The National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) take this opportunity to advise the pastors of member churches “to exercise due diligence and careful discernment when inviting foreign guest preachers to minister in their congregations. This is to preserve the harmonious religious environment that currently exists in our nation, which allows Christians to fulfil their dual role of seeking the welfare of the city and sharing the good news based on our faith.”

“Positively, Christians are to foster trust and mutual respect across different faiths, and do whatever we can to build bridges of friendship that counteract religious polarization and strengthen the bedrock of good relations between different communities for our present and future generations.”

“Scripture reminds us that ‘in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.’ (1 Peter 3:15).”

“May the good Lord grant us in these challenging times the wisdom and grace we need to be true to His calling to proclaim the Gospel (both in word and deed) as well as promote the common good of all those we share everyday life with, whatever their faith.”
