THE Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) disbursed $38,500 to 164 recipients at its 10th Bursary Award 2004 presentation at the Methodist Centre on Nov 29, 2003.
Mrs Laureen Ong, Chairman of the MWS Bursary Award Committee, was the Guest-of-Honour. In her “pep talk”, Mrs Ong, who is the President of the General Conference Women’s Society of Christian Service, encouraged the students to continue to study hard.
Also present at the presentation were Mr Chan Kum Kit, Chairman of MWS, the Rev Goh Aik Hiang, MWS Chaplain, Mrs Lee Siew Choo, Principal of Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School, Mrs Amy Chan, Ms Pauline Chan and Mr David Koh.
More than 450 applications for the bursaries were received by the MWS. However, only about one third of them were successful.
A total of 107 bursaries were awarded to primary school pupils and 57 were given out to secondary school students. The students were given the awards based on their academic performance and financial status.
Families of the late Mr Edwin Chan and Mr Chew Kia Song have set up some individual bursary awards for the educational needs of disadvantaged students.
At the presentation, the Edwin Chan Award went to Lai Hui Ru and Soh Xue Wen. Recipients of the Chew Kia Song Awards were Bjorn Chan, Lai Qian Ying, Ling Wei Loong and Tang Chee Wei.
The presentation ended with a tea reception. A goody bag was given to every bursary recipient.
The MWS has been giving bursaries since 1987.
