The Education of Highly Creative People (Armour Publishing)

I HAVE been a teacher and parent for 40 odd years and having read these letters from “âŠDad to Son”, I am convinced that the writers have effectively found the way to communicate relevant issues with secondary school-going children and everyone who takes the task of education seriously.
The topics, “On Education”, “On Creativity”, “On Life” and “The Education of Highly Creative People”, will appeal to the reader as the short essays are in the voices of those who have been through the demands and joys of school life.
Which student is not concerned about examinations? Who is not crushed by failure but wants understanding and motivation to try again? How does one not want to get more hints on being a better student or parent or teacher?
The conversational tone used in addressing these problems and more, shows neither down-talking to the young reader nor disrespect for the teacher. It appeals and convinces the need to change and for the better.
Although much valuable space is given to “Famous Dropouts and Underachievers”, it does fulfil its objective to motivate and inspire.
The writers’ nostalgic trip back to their childhood in the early 50s and 60s in Singapore only lends credibility and sincerity to what they desire to share with their “son”.
What makes the book more readable is the refreshing illustrations by Tan Keng Chiew, the apt quotations and photographs accompanying each essay.
The writers provide much food for thought on the larger theme of the book, which is on education. Their intention is seen in these statements: “Education is the key to our future. It needs to be constantly updated to meet the rapid changes and challenges of today.”
They provide some answers but in collaboration with educationists, creative education will be the norm soon.
