Busking for Change

To raise funds for and awareness of the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH), 350 Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) students, parents, staff, alumni and members from Living Waters Methodist Church put up 130 performances along Orchard Road in the afternoon of Saturday, 28 May 2016. Highlights of the event ‘Busking for Change’ included musical performances, mimes, human statues, magic tricks, and even a poetry recital.

Performers sought not only to entertain the public, but also to raise funds and awareness for SAMH and lend support to Singapore’s many patients and their families. According to the 2010 Singapore Mental Health Study, one in 10 people in Singapore will suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime. The majority of people with mental illness are not seeking help soon enough. Through this event, the organisers hope that there will be greater awareness and support for those suffering from mental conditions.

The event raised over $23,000 and we are very grateful to all the performers and supporters who contributed their time, talents, and “small change” so generously to this initiative. Ultimately, the spirit of charity, empathy, and understanding toward mental health in Singapore was the most important “change” we strived to make. Going forward from this event, we sincerely hope that everyone will consciously bear this attitude in mind, and actively create a more inclusive society for Singapore.
