Inter-Civilisation Dialogue to foster harmony

THE Centre for Contemporary Islamic Studies has taken the initiative to collaborate with people of other faiths in launching a series of inter-civilisation dialogues in Singapore.

The objective is to foster inter-ethnic and inter-faith understanding and promote social cohesion in Singapore. It seeks to provide time and opportunity for members of different religious communities to meet, discuss and share ideas on matters of common interest and concern which will bring about greater goodwill and harmony.

The Inaugural Inter-Civilisation Dialogue will be conducted on Jan 12 from 2.30 pm to 7 pm at Orchard Hotel. Mr Wee Kim Wee, the former President of Singapore, is the guest of honour. The keynote address will be delivered by Archbishop Nicholas Chia of the Catholic Church.

The panel discussion will have presentations by Associate Professor Kirpal Singh, Sister Theresa Seow, Associate Professor Syed Farid Alatas, Mr Chandran Mohan and Dr Kevin Tan. They will discuss ways to improve racial understanding and religious harmony.

The organising committee for this event is intentionally composed of members of different religious faiths. Associate Professor Hussin Mutalib and the Rev Dr Yap Kim Hao are the co-chairman. Participation is by invitation. Those interested in attending can contact the Rev Dr Yap at tel: 250-4561.
