MY CAREER – GOD’S CALLING
I FIRST HEARD GOD’S CALL to full-time ministry in 1990 while I was studying at a polytechnic. At this time I was also serving in church as a musician and worship leader.
In 1995 after completing my National Service, I joined Forerunner’s stint programme for six months. It was during this time that I decided I wanted to study music to serve God more effectively through music. My home church, Aldersgate Methodist Church (AMC), sponsored me for a course on contemporary music at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. is was a dream come true for me. I returned to Singapore and served with (AMC) for four years before joining Truth Ministries (TRAC Youth Ministries) in 2003.
My work involves providing resource to youth ministries in the Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC) churches as well as providing training for youth workers. We also work directly with youth in discipleship and mentoring.
As part of my work in Trackers (A Discipleship programme by Truthmin), I am mentoring a group of eight youths for a period of 10 weeks. I am really blessed as I get to share my life with them and they in turn share their lives with me. It gets intense sometimes and I do feel emotionally drained. But I still enjoy just hanging out with them.
Another area of my work in Truthmin is the Creative Arts. I am blessed to be working with Annabel Ong and Reginald Chan who are gifted worship leaders. I enjoy teaching and training youths in the area of worship and music. We run workshops and camps where we get to share our passion and experience in worship leading and musicianship in various instruments.
Over the years we have seen our youths develop as musicians and worshippers. Some have become ministry partners in leading worship. Some have come back to serve as instructors. is has been a real joy for us.
I get to lead worship with my team at churches and our Methodist school chapels. Over the past year we have taken time out to write songs for worship, some of which speak about who God is.
We are passionate about using music and media in sharing Jesus with this generation. We have performed in concerts as a band and also partnered with churches to do evangelistic concerts.
What I find most fulfilling in my work through serving the youth and serving with them is the time spent in between teaching, training or leading worship when we share our lives over a meal or coffee. I get to hear their struggles and their joys.
The hardest part in ministry is managing my time between work and being a good husband and father. e line between work and church gets blurred. By Mark Masillamoney
