Missions Conference to kick-start MMS’ 20th Anniversary joy

THE METHODIST MISSIONS SOCIETY (MMS) will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year with the following events:

Missions Conference – Aug 20 at Toa Payoh Methodist Church, MMS Thanksgiving Service – Aug 20 at Toa Payoh Methodist Church,

Missionaries’ Retreat – Aug 22 to 24 at Methodist Centre, and MMS Fund-raising Banquet – Aug 28 at Orchard Hotel.

MMS missionaries and elders from Cambodia, China, Thailand, Nepal, Timor Leste and Vietnam will be participating in these celebratory events.

The Thanksgiving Service scheduled for Aug 20 will celebrate God’s goodness in providing dedicated leaders and faithful missionaries who have paved the way over the past 20 years.

This service will also recognise partner churches and individual Methodists who have toiled alongside us in sacrificial love over the years.

A commemorative book highlighting the work of the MMS will be launched at the Thanksgiving Service. Associate Professor Robbie Goh from the National University of Singapore is writing this book to mark the special occasion.

Preceding the Thanksgiving Service at Toa Payoh Methodist Church on Aug 20, a Missions Conference will be held at the same venue from 9 am to 4.30 pm. The conference will feature a keynote speaker, panel discussions, and workshops aimed at doing things in new and more effective ways in the mission field. The Rev John Wesley, the General Secretary of the Indian Evangelical Mission, will teach, stir and motivate the MMS labourers to be more effective in God’s mission.

Three days will be set aside for the MMS missionaries to be spiritually refreshed and restored at a retreat to be held at Methodist Centre from Aug 22 to 24. Besides the fellowship and sharing, strategic MMS plans will be discussed.

The MMS will host a fund-raising banquet on Aug 28 at Orchard Hotel. The MMS Biennial Banquet for Businessmen, Professionals and Entrepreneurs aims to encourage and engage people from the Methodist community, other churches, and institutions to be personally and financially involved in its work. It hopes to see 1,000 people coming for this important event.

In addition to the celebratory events, two “Vacation with a Mission” trips are being planned for May and October. The first trip, from May 9 to 16, is to Taiping and Huangshan, Anhui, China.

Visitors will explore the beauty of Huangshan and go on a cultural tour in Tunxi. They will also visit the Old Market and Flower Hill of Taiping as well as the film location of “Crouching Tiger and Hidden Tiger” at the Jade Valley.

Col (Retd) Quek Koh Eng is an Area Director and Director of Operations of the Methodist Missions Society.

English teachers needed for China

THE METHODIST MISSIONS SOCIETY (MMS) is appealing for teachers from our Methodist churches to help it launch an important ministry in China.

Reaching out to university students through the teaching of English is a key ministry of the MMS in China. The MMS is looking for at least two or three English teachers. They are needed to teach undergraduates in listening, speaking and reading skills and Business English, as well as to prepare them to sit for English examinations.

The academic year begins in September and ends in June the following year. Each semester covers four months. The first semester begins in September and the second semester commences in February. Curriculum will be provided.

The MMS is looking for:

RETIRED ENGLISH TEACHERS or English teachers or people who have been trained to teach English as a second language to foreign students, and

PEOPLE WHO COULD SERVE the Lord in China for one or two years. However, the MMS also welcomes the assistance of those who will be available for just one semester or a few months.

The next academic year begins in early September this year, and the MMS urgently requires the teachers to help launch the English teaching programmes.

Support for living allowance in China can be worked out between the MMS and your home church.

If you would like to serve, please contact Mr David Khew, MMS Assistant Director for Church Liaison, at tel: 9678-8663, or email david.khew@methodist.org.sg
