No golfer was turned away
$80,000 raised for eldercare services

AUGUST 2, 2002 started bright and early for 22 golfers who were the first flights to take part in this year’s MWS (Methodist Welfare Services) Annual Golf Tournament. Held at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club, the tournament saw a total of 212 participants.

Besides the 22 morning golfers playing on the Classic Course, there was a shotgun tee-off in the afternoon, and another 46 played on the Masters Course. This was the result of the hard work put in by Christ Methodist Church, the convening church for this year’s tournament, in ensuring that no one who wanted to participate was turned away.

Our guest-of-honour, Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Manpower and MP for Jalan Besar GRC, a keen golfer himself, also played in the tournament.

Though no one drove away the hole-in-one Volkswagen Beetle, nearly every golfer brought home some prizes in the evening, thanks to the generosity of the sponsors.

The ultimate prize was the Dr Tay Eng Soon’s Challenge Trophy for the Men’s A and B Divisions, and Mrs Rosalyn Tay’s Challenge Trophy for the Ladies’ Division.

Ms Stella Yap from Covenant Community Methodist Church (CCMC), defending champion of the Ladies’ individual, retained her title once again. CCMC and The Third Place tied in winning the Mrs Rosalyn Tay’s Challenge Trophy. This win means that CCMC, champions for the past two years, will be keeping the trophy for good.

In the Men’s Division, Mr Elvin Kwa from The Third Place and Dr Peter Ng from Christ Methodist Church, won the Men’s A and B Divisions respectively. The Dr Tay Eng Soon’s Challenge Trophy was, once again, won by Christ Methodist Church.

MWS would like to congratulate the prize-winners and thank all the faithful supporters of the Methodist Welfare Services’ fund-raising project, the generous sponsors and donors who contributed towards raising a total sum exceeding $80,000 nett for our eldercare services.

Anne Law is the Executive Officer (PR and Fund-Raising) of the Methodist Welfare Services.
