People invest because they want to secure their future. Yet, noted Bishop Dr Wee Boon Hup, the experience of financial crises in recent years warns us that “nothing you invest in any kind of instrument can guarantee a secure future”.
Speaking at the Closing Service of the 39th Session of the Chinese Annual Conference on 13 Nov 2014, he added: “So the words of Jesus about laying up
treasures in heaven strikes a resonant chord during these times.”
Referring to Matthew 6:19-34, the Bishop noted that Jesus does not mention what these treasures are. However, he pointed out that God Himself is our reward, as the Psalmist understood there is nothing that can compare with the richness and preciousness of God (Psalm 16:11, 73:25).
Furthermore, Jesus says in Matthew 10:40-42 that whoever receives those whom He sends will receive Him as well. “This is very relevant tonight,” noted Bishop Dr Wee, “as we ordain Deacons and an Elder, and send out a missionary.”
The Rev Ling Tieng Ngung was ordained as an Elder, and Pastors Eric Soh, Edmund Koh, Tack Ng Lai Chun and Irman Halim were ordained as Deacons. At the same service, the Rev Gideon Choi was commissioned as a missionary to Thailand, and the Rev Dr Fong Mow Hee retired after 35 years of service.
