This course introduces students to the history of Christianity in Asia, from the earliest days in the first century through the arrival of western missionaries in colonial times to more recent developments. Students will gain an understanding of the historical development of Christianity in Asia as parallel and independent branches rather than as later developments to Western Christianity. Topics will include:
Journey to the East (Nestorianism)
Christianity under Islamic rule and the Mongols
Jesuit mission in Asia
Protestant mission in 19th century Asia
South Korea: A Christian success story?
Christianity and Buddhism in Southeast Asia
Christianity in Islamic Southeast Asia
