The Lord is close to the brokenhearted

Grief is a profound and universal experience that touches every human at some point in life. Whether through the loss of a loved one, a difficult trial or life’s many uncertainties, grief can feel overwhelming and isolating. There is a saying that the only certainty in life is death. If that were true, life becomes a joyless, purposeless existence with only a bleak end to look forward to. However, amidst the sin and pain we experience on earth, believers can find solace and strength in God’s comforting presence.

The Bible repeatedly reminds us that God is a refuge and a source of comfort in times of sorrow. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). This promise assures us that no matter how deep our pain, God’s compassion never fails. He understands our tears and hears our cries. Psalm 34:18 (NIV) affirms, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

For believers, God’s comfort often comes through his Word, bringing peace and reassurance that we are not alone. His promises remind us that in life and after death, our loved ones are in his loving care and that we will be reunited one day in his eternal presence. Additionally, God often uses loved ones, friends and the church community as instruments of his comfort, providing support, encouragement and prayer.

While grief may never fully disappear as we live out our earthly existence, God’s grace allows us to carry our sorrow with hope. It is in our moments of weakness that his strength sustains us.

Trusting in his unfailing love helps us to heal and find renewed purpose even in the midst of grief. We can also cling to the hope we have in knowing that Jesus has already conquered death and it is not the end for us. Our earthly lives, and thus our pain and grief, are but a short prelude to our eternal one!
