At the Workplace

Is it okay to go along with my boss’ feng shui practices?

What is the best response as a Christian to a boss who is deeply entrenched in feng shui and “enforces” some practices, for example, sending emails at a particular time, arranging furniture in a certain way. Can I just go along with it?

Dear On the job,

As a subordinate there isn’t much you can do to stop your boss from these feng shui practices. As a Christian, you can gently but firmly decline to be an active participant in activities related to worship (e.g. offering incense, displaying feng shui-related items on your table).

For sending emails at specific times and furniture arrangement, since it is more related to your boss’ superstition than actual worship, it is harmless to acquiesce. But you don’t have to just tolerate these practices—perhaps you may be used by God to transform your company. Consider yourself a modern-day Daniel in Babylon: do your work well, act with integrity, gain influence with your boss and pray for opportunities to share the gospel. Pray over your own workspace and gather other Christians in your office to pray for your boss and your company. You’ll never know how God will use you to bless your boss, your colleagues and your department, and glorify God.
