I‘ve been singing in the choir for over 20 years and more recently, as a backup vocalist in the worship team. I knew I wanted to serve, but more than that, I sensed that God was calling me to offer what I could for his purposes. For me, serving is part of what it means to follow Christ, to give of ourselves in service to God and to others.
It‘s not always easy. There are times when it‘s tiring or when things don‘t go smoothly. But I continue to rely on God for the strength and grace to keep going. He has always been faithful. What encourages me is hearing that someone has been ministered to, whether through the choir‘s singing or during worship time. It reminds me that God can use even ordinary voices to touch hearts and draw people closer to him.
Being part of the music ministry has also helped me feel more connected to the church community. There‘s something special about journeying together, learning to listen, supporting one another and offering what we have. These words from 1 Peter 4:10 capture it well, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace …”
Over the years, serving in this way has shaped me. It has grown my humility, my patience and my understanding of what it means to work with others for something greater than ourselves.
