On my wedding day, the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) ladies at my church gave me one of the most unforgettable expressions of love I have ever experienced. As a returning missionary, I was deeply touched by the beautiful wedding reception they prepared—from the church decorations to the delicious food served to some 400 guests. Every detail reflected their generosity, sacrifice and heartfelt care. I remember feeling overwhelmed by their kindness and thinking that I could not have asked for anything more beautiful. Their selfless love left such a deep impression on me that, 15 years later, when my two sons became teenagers, I felt led to join the WSCS ministry myself.
Over the years, my perspective on church ministry gradually changed. There was a time when I viewed the Methodist Church as a “big elephant” and felt that WSCS overlapped with the work of local church ministries. Yet through serving alongside fellow sisters in Christ, God opened my eyes to the beauty of the wider community of women within the local church and across the TRAC churches.
I began to see not only the strengths and limitations of the system, but more importantly, the grace of God at work through his people. I witnessed how God uses different gifts to build the body of Christ, how prayer changes hearts and how he teaches us to love and forgive through challenges and conflicts. Indeed, iron sharpens iron but only when we are willing to serve him together and grow spiritually.
