Using business as missions to transform lives

BAMBOO, which stands for Business As Missions, Blessings, Outreach and Opportunities, was started in June 2013 by a group of members and pastors from various Methodist churches in Singapore. It was incorporated as a wholly private entity.

The Methodist Church in Nepal (MCN) has adopted L.O.V.E. as the acronym representing the key focus areas for MCN churches. L.O.V.E. represents Leadership Development, Organisation Framework, Vibrant Community, and Enduring Ministry.

Breaking the poverty cycle

Mdm Tan Chiew Leng, 52, has been through some rough patches in life. At the age of three, she was placed in a children’s home by her mother, where she stayed till the age of 18.

What do heroes look like?

As Christians, we honour many heroes of the Bible: Noah, Moses, Esther, Rahab, Peter, Mary Magdalene and Paul. We also cherish modern heroes of the faith like Hudson Taylor, William Carey and Corrie ten Boom.

Saving souls in the Wesleyan Spirit

Habakkuk’s prophetic message in Habakkuk 2:14, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea”, continually challenges us to mobilise God’s people to reach out to the vast number of people who have never heard the gospel.

As a denominational missions agency, the sustainability of the Methodist Missions Society’s ministries, and indeed, the rationale for our very existence, depend on how deeply the Singapore Methodist churches and community are invested in what we do.

Turning darkness into light

Mrs Lui met “God’s gift” to her, John Lui, on a bus when she was 26 years old. The two started dating not long after, eventually married, and led simple yet contented lives while raising two children.

Putting ‘family’ at the heart of residential care

Poornam Thanam, 50, was admitted to a community hospital in May 2020 after a heart attack and stroke left her partially paralysed. Although she befriended another Indian resident at the hospital, they hardly interacted as they were staying far apart, and she often felt isolated and lonely.
