Indian church leader calls on Bishop

AS PRESIDENT of the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS), Bishop Dr Robert Solomon receives numerous heads of churches.

He recently hosted the President of the National Council of Churches of India, His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, who paid a visit on July 18. Mar Coorilos is Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the Bombay Diocese in India.

The name Malankara Orthodox Church refers to the section of the St Thomas Christians of India, that Canonically came under Catholicate of the East with its headquarters at Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India.

St Thomas Christians at present belong to 10 churches and denominations. The Malankara Orthodox Church is one of them and it is the second largest. It looks to the Apostle Thomas as the one who first brought the Gospel to India.

Accompanying Mar Coorilos were Father V. C. Jose, Vicar at St Thomas Orthodox Syrian Cathedral in Singapore, a member of the NCCS, and Mr Thomas Jacob, a lay member and treasurer. St Thomas has a membership of 170 families.
