Methodist Volunteers: Bishop to launch movement on Dec 28

The logo was designed by Ms Catherine Lim, a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church.

THE two blue circles, together with the curves at the top of the heart, represent volunteers with The Methodist Church in Singapore united in their service to the community. The heart symbolises the care and love of Methodists as they reach out to serve.

WITH a vision to be “Rooted in Christ, serving others”, the Methodist Volunteers movement will be officially launched at an inauguration service at Toa Payoh Methodist Church on Dec 28 at 3 pm.

A tea fellowship will follow after the service.

An initiative of the Bishop’s Office, Methodist Volunteers will promote Christian volunteering by encouraging Methodists to live out their discipleship in the Wesleyan tradition, and by supporting the work of all the Methodist agencies.

Under the leadership of Mr John Cheong, the Methodist Volunteers committee has already prepared significant groundwork. An interactive web site has been launched, modelled after the National Volunteer Centre, so that individuals may sign up to volunteer with a project of a Methodist agency, such as the Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) or the Methodist Hospice Fellowship (MHF).

An introductory training module is also being prepared for anyone interested in volunteering – “Discovery and learning experience for volunteers”.

The Dec 28 event will include a worship service, with a short sermon by Bishop Dr Solomon, presentations on the Methodist agencies, and an opportunity to sign up as a Methodist Volunteer. Representatives and volunteers from most of the agencies and organisations will be there, including the MWS, the MHF, Women’s Society of Christian Service, Methodist Schools Parent Support Groups, Methodist Missions Society and the Methodist Co-operative Society.

Churches are urged to be well-represented.
