THE 3rd Singapore Company of The Boys’ Brigade, attached to Stamford Primary School and Guang Yang Secondary School, and based at Wesley Methodist Church, celebrated its 70th anniversary on July 5, 2003.

Unlike most “traditional” anniversaries, the usual sit-down dinner was done away with. Instead, there was an Orienteering Competition organised at Fort Canning Park. It drew 200 participants from five other BB companies as well as a team each from the Scouts and National Cadet Corps and two teams each from the National Police Cadet Corps from Guang Yang Secondary School.

After a short prayer, the Rev Melvin Huang, Pastor-in-Charge of Wesley Methodist Church, flagged off the participants from Wesley Plaza. The participants were given two hours to visit eight stations located at various points in Fort Canning Park. Each station required participants to perform specific tasks, for example, frying an egg, pitching a tent and administering first-aid. There was also a “marksmanship test” at one of the stations.

Teams that completed at least four stations were allowed to score a bonus of 20 points by going to the Company Chaplain, the Rev Lim Jen Huat, who gave participants a chance to taste pickles. The “bonus point” station was set up to motivate the teams to work harder to enable them to accumulate more points.

There was a time of worship and a sharing about God’s goodness to the 3rd Company for the past 70 years by Col (NS) David Wong, the guest-of-honour. Col (NS) Wong is the LCEC Chairman of Wesley Methodist Church, a former member of the 3rd Company and Honorary Captain of the Company.

The event ended with a prize presentation to the top teams, followed by a buffet dinner.
