CAC President’s mother: A woman of faith

OBITUARY: MADAM GOH GEK CHENG (1922-2005)

homepage6-August 2005

MADAM Goh Gek Cheng, 83, mother of the Rev Khoo Cheng Hoot, President of the Chinese Annual Conference (CAC), was called home to be with the Lord on June 19, 2005.

She was the wife of Mr Khoo Hock Nam, President of the Senior Citizens Ministry of Hinghwa Methodist Church.

The wake was held at the All Saints Memorial Chapel with nightly memorial services on June 20, 22 and 23. The services were not only attended by pastors and members of our Methodist churches but also by leaders and pastors of other denominations.

The Rev David Liew Chuan Jih and the Rev Chua Ooi Suah, District Superintendents East and West of the CAC, spoke on the first two nights of the service. Bishop Emeritus Wong Kiam Thau was the speaker on the third night.

The CAC pastors attended the funeral service on June 23, and sang a hymn in tribute to the late Madam Goh.

The Voices of Praise Choir sang on the second night.

Mrs Maggie Khoo, Madam Goh’s eldest daughter-in-law, gave the eulogy on the same night.

She said: “Throughout her illness and 35 days’ stay in hospital, I saw her unwavering faith and complete trust and obedience to God.

“She did not complain about the pain, she did not complain about her condition; nor did she ask that we pray for God’s healing so that she could live a little longer.

“She bore with the pain and discomfort quietly – accepting what God has allowed to happen in her life. She trusted the Lord, her Saviour, her Jehovah Jireh.

“Her child-like yet strong faith in God was so evident in her life. She was full of thanksgiving in riches and in hardship. She was contented in the Lord, she did not want what she did not have.”

Mrs Khoo said her mother-in-law was friendly to all, rich or poor, young or old.

“My mother-in-law may not appear as a great spiritual leader, but she left behind a legacy of her unwavering faith and complete trust in God. It was her prayer that we may love God and continue to serve Him,” added Mrs Khoo.
