Wheels for GOOD: Two rides to mark two milestones

Mr Andy Chew, 43, is a veteran fundraising cyclist. Over the past four years, he has cycled for different charitable causes, and raised almost $40,000 in total.

This year, despite nursing a broken thumb, Andy is taking on the Wheels for GOOD SG50 Scenic Ride. He has also persuaded three of his cycling buddies from Trinity Methodist Church to join him on this momentous ride.

“It has always been a joy to use a sport I love to raise funds for the needy,” said Andy. “Cycling for GOOD is my way of paying it forward.”

He will join 500 other cyclists who will ride in two races to celebrate two milestones, Singapore’s Golden Jubilee (SG50) and the 130th anniversary of The Methodist Church in Singapore (MCS 130) at the Wheels for GOOD event on 15 Aug 2015 at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

Organised by Methodist Welfare Services (MWS), the funds raised at Wheels for GOOD will go towards the Getting Out Of Debt (GOOD) Programme, which aims to clear chronic debt accumulated through daily living from identified needy families from over ten social service agencies such as MWS’ Tampines, Daybreak and Covenant Family Service Centres.

The idea of mounting an event based on wheels reflects the 360-degree approach that MWS employs to enable beneficiaries to beat the poverty cycle. This approach includes meeting immediate needs through financial assistance, empowering them through counselling, debt management and financial education, as well as preparing them for the future through support for the educational and psychosocial needs of their children.

SG50 Scenic Ride and MCS 130 Fun Ride
An estimated 300 cycling enthusiasts will take on the SG50 ScenicRide (50 km) that will cover scenic spots around Singapore such as Upper Thomson and Punggol.

Another 200 cyclists will take on the MCS 130 Fun Ride (13 km), ideal for families and friends who want to share a leisurely ride along the Park Connector Network (PCN) starting from Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

All registration fees collected through the Wheels for GOOD event will be channelled to the GOOD Programme.

Come celebrate at a ‘wheely’ fun carnival

A “wheels-themed” fun carnival for families, young and old, as well as GOOD beneficiaries will also be organised at the park. Carnival-goers can relive the childhood game of rolling bicycle rims with a stick, and take part in various group and individual activities such as Wheelchair Basketball Challenge, Inline Skating Obstacle Challenge, kids’ roller-racing and Human Foosball Challenge.

Trinity Methodist Church to join him in “cycling for
GOOD” on 15 Aug 2015.
